What is Mandatory Internship?
Mandatory Internship in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is an applied study in the fields of Mathematics and / or Computer Science in the public or private workplaces starting from the end of the 4th semester until the graduation.
Who Performs a Mandatory Internship?
Internship is compulsory for students enrolled in the program as of 2018-2019 academic year.
What is the Mandatory Internship Duration?
- Mandatory Internship duration is 40 workdays in total.
- The 40-day Compulsory Internship should be done in two parts as 20 (MB0023 INTERNSHIP I) + 20 (MB0030 INTERNSHIP II) days.
- It is recommended that these 20-day periods be completed in different institutions or different departments of the same institution so that the student can recognize different institutions and have different experiences.
- 20-day internship periods can be divided into two as maximum 10 + 10 days.
- In case of working on Saturdays or Sundays, a certified document stating that they work on Saturdays or Sundays from the internship institution must be submitted to the Department.
When Can A Student Do Internship?
Compulsory Internship can be done from the end of the 4th semester.
The student starts to take MB0023 INTERNSHIP and MB0030 INTERNSHIP II courses between the courses to be selected in the ORION system in both Fall and Spring semesters. The student who chooses the Compulsory Internship courses at the Summer School does not pay any contribution for these courses.
Students can complete their Mandatory Internship during the Fall and Spring semesters, Summer and Semester holidays during the non-scheduled hours.
The student should not have a course during the hours of his Mandatory Internship.
Internship Place
Internships can be done in the workplaces announced by the Department and the Faculty or in the institutions chosen by the student and approved by the Department.
How to Apply for Internship?
The internship application is made online via İKÜ-INTERNSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM and includes the following steps:
- Student contracts with an institution to complete the Mandatory Internship.
- In case the institution of the internship is requested, the student fills out the MANDATORY INTERNSHIP FORM with his academic advisor. It is stated that the internship done in this form is mandatory and the insurance premiums will be paid by the University. This document must be issued in 3 original copies (not photocopies) and must be submitted to the Financial Affairs Department at least 20 days before the Compulsory Internship start date, together with a photocopy of the identity card and 2 passport photos.
- The student shows that he / she has been accepted to do the internship from the institution where he / she will perform the Compulsory Internship and receives a signed INSTITUTION APPROVAL prepared on letterhead paper.
- The student fills the online application form via İKÜ-INTERNSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. The internship application must be made at least 10 days before the internship start date. Otherwise, the system will not accept the application. During the application, the Institution Approval Letter taken from the institution where the internship will be performed should be loaded. The completed form is sent to the advisor's approval.
- Applications made through the system are submitted to the approval of the consultant. A student whose mandatory internship application is not approved repeats this procedure. The student whose application is approved starts the Mandatory Internship.
What a Student Should Do During Internship?
- The student writes the activities and the informations that s/he gained to his/her INTERNSHIP REPORT.
- The internship report should be filled in daily, with at least one page per day, and be reported for a total of 20 working days. If the internship is completed at once in different departments of the same institution as 40 days, a single report covering 40 working days must be submitted.
- All documents that make up the report must be fully bound (spiral bound).
- All documents (including images) in the report should be stamped and signed by the official of the internship department at the institution.
- The report should be comprehensive enough to convey the student's activities during the internship.
- The report should be written in a decent Turkish, in a passive language, in 12 font size (such as “… done… seen….”)
- The report should be written on the computer. Handwritten reports will never be accepted.
- Internship reports of students who do internship in the same workplace in the same period should never be the same. Reports that are the same will be returned and asked to be rewritten.
What A Student Should Do After The End Of The Internship?
- At the end of the Mandatory Internship, the INSTITUTION INTERN EVALUATION FORM and CONTINUE FOLLOW-UP SCHEDULE are delivered to the student as closed and signed in an envelope by the insitution's authorized person.
- The prepared Internship Report must be submitted to the advisor with the REPORT OF THE INTERNSHIP DOCUMENTS within 1 month after the internship is completed, together with the Intern Trainees Evaluation Form and Attendance Tracking Schedule.
When determining the delivery date of the report, the date of entering the course grades in the Academic Calendar into the ORION system should also be taken into consideration - The counselor delivers the documents he received from the student to the INTERNSHIP COMMITTEE.
- The Internship Committee completes the STAJ KOMİSYONU STAJ DEĞERLENDİRME FORMU and decides the acceptance or rejection of the internship. If the internship is accepted, the student is given successful (Y) and if not, letter (Z) is given.
What is the Effect of Mandatory Internship on Course Load and GNO?
- According to the decision taken in the Senate dated 31.03.2016, the credits of MB0023 Internship I and MB0030 Internship II courses to be applied as of 2015-16 Academic Year will not be counted towards the excess course load. The decision covers all students who do internship from that date on, regardless of the period in which the student is enrolled.
- The internship report is determined in accordance with the criteria mentioned above, in the direction specified by the INTERNSHIP REGULATION (in the form of passed-left). The first internship by the student is in the 5th semester under MB0023 INTERNSHIP I course (2 ECTS), and the second internship is in VII. It appears in the term (2 ECTS) and does not participate in the GNO.
How to Do an Internship Abroad?
2 types of internship are accepted.
1. Erasmus Student Internship Mobility Activity is an internship program that all university students can apply to gain vocational education and / or work experience within a business or organization within a European Union member country that is included in the European Union Education and Youth Programs. 2. Under the responsibility of the student, in an overseas company:
- The student communicates with the firm.
- Fills in the online internship form. Students who will do internship abroad are also obliged to fill the compulsory internship form. However, the insurance made by the school does not cover the workplaces abroad, the internship form is filled in as part of the process due to other legal obligations. Therefore, students who are Turkish or foreign nationals who are going to do their internships abroad are also recommended to have insurance.
- The student performs his/her internship.
- At the end of the internship, s/he writes the internship report in two languages, one in Turkish, approves the authorized person on behalf of the company and delivers it to the Internship Committee.
